Same Sex Marriage Debate Over The Free Speech Clause And...

Judging from this article from Wall Street Journal, the major conflict that exists in this same-sex-marriage-legalization debate is between the free-speech clause and antidiscrimination law. Technically, the people who refused to offer their service to the homosexual people based on their religious belief were not legally wrong according to the first amendment. However, did the homosexual couples do anything wrong? No, they didn’t. They ordered the same services, and they were willing to pay the same amount of money. What they wanted was nothing illegal. Then here comes the dilemma, how can neither of them be â€Å"wrong† in a conflict? So, this paper will analyze the â€Å"rightness† and the â€Å"wrongness† in an ethical dilemma between civil rights†¦show more content†¦For Kantian ethics, the standard is based on if most people are acting the same way. Even though some people are still struggling on whether they should support the LGBT communit y, the statistics give us a clear trend of people’s change of their perspective on same-sex marriage. According to the national polling data, the number of people who support the same-sex marriage had risen from 37 percent in 2005 to 60 percent in 2015. Apparently, with the development of the modern society, more and more people are becoming open-minded and willing to show their support to the LGBT community. Moreover, while some religious people against the same-sex marriage, some of them choose to support it due to the different interpretation of the bible they are holding. â€Å"Jesus never said a single word about gays or lesbians or same-sex marriage, or any of the other social issues that so many people seem to be possessed with fighting today†, said Ducan(n.d),a Christian. Since the number of supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage has an increasing tendency, in this instance, same-sex marriage can be defined morally right standing on the popular belie f. For the principle of Rights, whether a business decision is defined ethical depends on how it affects the rights of stakeholders, including owners, consumers, employees, the community and the society. For the firms that rejected to do business with Gay couples, they

Revitalizing dell free essay sample

Dell Computer Corporation was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell. From the early 1990s until the mid-2000s, Dell was ranked as a PC market leader relying on their distinctive marketing pattern â€Å"Direct Model† which undertook direct communication with customers and provided customized products. Recently, the PC industry is facing inconceivable worldwide competition, and Dell is gradually losing their competitive advantages by using its direct model in critical business segments. The company is facing shrinkage of growth, increasing competition, declining quality of customer service, and limitation of expansion. These issues have an enormous impact on Dell’s position as a technological giant in the PC industry. Problem Definition Generally, in order to consolidate its top market position, Dell Computer Corporation has to keep its competitive advantage and figure out the issues which come from the internal and external environment. First, as globalization continues to develop, it is bringing both opportunities and threats to companies worldwide. We will write a custom essay sample on Revitalizing dell or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The PC market is experiencing constant renewal and replacement and this results in the reducing of differentiation and the increase in price wars among competitors. In the early 1990, Dell was positioned as â€Å"focused differentiation† in the PC market and attracted a lot of customers by using their superior customer service. However, Dell’s competitive differentiation from its competitors, which is based on its â€Å"customized product†, is not its core competence anymore in 2007 since Dell’s remarkable direct model has been imitated by other companies. Second, although the PC market is a highly competitive and rivalrous market, the profitability is still attracting the attention of companies to squeeze into this market. Therefore, Dell is facing the challenging threat of new entries into the market. Additionally, due to the diversified products, customers have more options on computer brands, styles, and functions in the current market. This also forces Dell’s position to move from supplier power towards buyer power. In brief, when an industry is growing, more rivalry is likely to enter the market. Third, internal erroneous decisions will negatively impact Dell’s long-term operations as well. In 2001, Dell decided to move its support center to India, and this directly resulted in a declining perception of the company’s customer service. Although the company is providing its â€Å"superior customized product†, the quality of customer service is another key element for keeping customer loyalty. Finally, the traditional direct model strategy is not appropriate in the current PC market. The direct model mainly focuses on operational efficiency and organizational restrictions on individual customers, but this limits the company to step into new business segments for long-term operation. This model has restricted Dell from gaining market share in the â€Å"single consumer† segment, and has resulted in an inability to offer more customized products to diverse customer segments. Furthermore, globalization is creating additional opportunities for the PC market. The United States is Dell’s primary market and yet the company is competing in the global computer market. Therefore, Dell will need to consider expanding its market globally in order to develop its differentiation advantage outside of the U. S. Diagnosis Dell’s accomplishments through the mid-2000s caused its rivals to take notice and action. IBM and Lenovo launched a direct distributive initiative and created the Authorized Assembly Program which improved their inventory turnover rate. Compaq also optimized its distribution model by building orders only after they were received which declined their inventory holding. HP began selling PCs directly to business customers online and initiated a toolkit to increase consulting and sales training. Gateway focused on individual customers rather than large corporations. Acer eventually bought Gateway and differentiated itself as â€Å"100% indirect† company that specialized in producing inexpensive notebooks. Dell positioned itself as a successful differentiator; however, its competitive differentiation is no longer an advantage for it due to the ease of their Direct Model imitation. Home and corporate users dominate the five categories of buyers on PC consumption. There are large amounts of these buyers in the market that are price sensitive and have low switching costs on their products which raises overall buyers’ power. However, in the case of Dell, many customers became frustrated with Dell. For example, Dell’s call centers received manyf discouraged clients’ comments. One reason: many service representatives were trained to solve only one category of a problem, so almost 45% of calls had to be transferred from the agent who answered the call to someone with the knowledge needed to help the customer. Richard L. Hunter, who was brought in to improve Dell’s customer service, called the situation â€Å"terrible†, explaining that it was comparable to â€Å"delivering materials to the wrong factory 45 percent of the time. † Worse, to slow the tide of calls from customers, Dell tried removing its toll-free service number from its website. Customers’ reactions showed up in Dell’s declining market share and slumping customer satisfaction ratings (Certo, 2013). Moreover, when Dell went on to expand its tech support outsourcing with other call centres in India, customers began complaining. Consequently, Dell stopped being perceived as an American role model (Munarriz, 2012). Overall, in recent years, Dell has started to experience problems with its direct sales model and has steadily been losing ground to HP, who now occupies the number one spot in the PC sales market. Analysts had felt that the innovative sales model developed by Dell had made it the industry favourite and also a high indicator of good sales growth. However, industry insiders have now observed that those upbeat days appeared to be over for Dell as the companys profits and share prices had dropped considerably. The diagnosis, then, is that Dell’s traditional direct model is failing because the market, the competitors and the consumers have changed and yet Dell still uses the same model which Michael Dell invented in the early 1990s. Cause-Effect Analysis As companies such as Compaq, HP, Lenovo and Acer imitated Dell’s direct model for sales of their PCs, this quickly began to cut away at Dell’s competitive advantage. Dell’s direct model brought in large profits for the company and gave them â€Å"the title of worlds biggest computer maker† (Sorensen, 2013). However with the other computer makers vying for the top spot in the competitive PC manufacturing space, the direct model â€Å"spawned a host of imitators—several who proved to be better equipped to take advantage of the business model Dell thought it had perfected. †(Sorensen, 2013) The adoption by other PC makers of cutting out the wholesaler and selling directly to the consumer caused Dell to â€Å"relinquish the title of world’s biggest computer maker to HP in 2006. † (Sorensen, 2013) In the below graph representing more recent years of the top 5 PC makers shows that Lenovo has also now surpassed Dell in market share. Piaget Stage Theory Essays - Child Development, Cognitive Psychology

Piaget Stage Theory The project is based on Piaget`s stage theory of cognitive development Prediction Based on Piaget`s theory, children during the pre - operational stage have acquired the ability to stand apart and view themselves from another person`s perspective. They are able to describe themselves as different from other children by listing their unique characteristics, especially the fact that their names are different. They develop a more complex understanding of themselves, such as age, name, family etc.. During the same stage children become aware of and use gender as a dimension by which to classify people. Once children become aware of their own sex, they learn to label themselves as boy or girl. Early childhood is the time when children start to learn family values, and become a cooperative part of the family with their own responsibilities. They spend countless hours of play and other activities with their siblings. Although young children may use words reflecting an understanding of time, such as minute, hour, day, or week, they still confuse the concept of time and space. Based on Piaget`s theory, I believe that the interviewed children will know their age, name, gender, and their siblings. I do not expect to know their exact birthday and address because it is still too abstract for them. Furthermore, I do not expect that the background/culture is influencing the children`s answers to my questions. I believe that all four tested children do understand and are able to answer my questions. Methods Interviewing four children from different backgrounds was the method use to assess the children`s cognitive development. The four-year-old identical twin girls were interviewed in the living room of their parents` house. Each girl was interviewed separately. The five-year-old German boy was interviewed by phone, and the six year old Asian - American boy was interviewed at the neighborhood playground. Each interview took approximately 10 minutes. Hanna: 4 years old, female, white, American, has an identically twin sister and a younger sister. Emma: 4 years old, female, white, American, Hanna`s twin. Hanna and Emma are not going to school yet. They are staying with a nanny and their younger sister at home, while both parents are working. Max - Raphael: 5 years old, male, white, German, youngest of three children, parents are divorced, living with mother and older sisters, no contact with father, staying home with mother. Timothy: 6 years old, Asian - American, oldest of two boys, bilingual, living with both parents, going to a private Christian school. Questionnaire: 1. Name: Tell me your name. If child gave only the first name: What is the rest of it? 2. Age: How old are you? If fingers shown: How many does that make? If still no answer, let the child count fingers. 3. Sex/Gender: Are you a boy or a girl? 4. Siblings: Do you have any brothers and / or sisters? What are their names? How old are they? 5. Birthday: When is your birthday? 6. Address: Where are you living? What is your address? Results Hanna and Emma were both able to give me their names immediately. They also knew their age, gender, and they were able to name and give me the age of their sister. However, they did not know their address or birthday. I did not have to tease the answer out bit by bit. They were ready to give me a concrete answer. The answers I got from both were short and specific. Max - Raphael knew his name, age, sex, and was able to name and give the age of his sisters. He, like Hanna and Emma, did not know his address and birthday. Max - Raphael gave me his age, gender, and his sisters' name and age immediately, but I had to ask him about his surname. Timothy could answer every question. His answers were concrete and given readily. I did not have to tease any question out of him. The results support my prediction in most points. All children were able to give me their age, gender, sex, and the name and age of their siblings. I was not too sure if Timothy would be able to give me his correct birthday and address, although he is already attending school. Discussion The study is only based on four pre - operational children but the results show that there are no major differences cross - culturally in the children`s knowledge and experience. The five-year-old German boy knew as much as the four-year-old American girls. The fact that the six year old Asian -

Today I Choose Me Professor Ramos Blog

Today I Choose Me Apart of love is wondering where you belong and where you fit in. Sometimes that is looking for love in the places we think are right for us and it could be us looking in the wrong places. What attracts us to someone? Is it in the tone of their voice when we listen to them speak? The feeling of their touch the minute they lay a single hand on you? Is it how their laugh makes you smile? Or is it them introducing you to the most important people in their life? We never truly know what it is that a person may see in us that makes them attracted to us. Because we dont truly know these things it often leads us to insecurities, depression, self-doubt, and sometimes death. In â€Å"Bien Pretty† by Sandra Cisneros, Lupe points out â€Å"What kills me is your silence. So certain, so solid. Not a note, nor postcard. Not a phone call, no number I could reach you at. No address I could write to. Neither yes nor no. Just the void. The days raw and wide as this drought-blue sky. Just the n othingness. That’s what hurts† (Cisneros 157). A man that she fell in love with just vanished as if everything they done was meaningless. Lupe was devastated and heartbroken when Flavio left, it took her weeks to pull herself up from this pain. During the time that Flavio was modeling for Lupe they began telling stories about each others lives. â€Å"What I liked best about working with Flavio were the stories† (Cisneros 148). How could this poor Mexican man that had very little take so much from her? Lupe began looking at Flavio a different way, she then imagined how â€Å"With skin sweet as burnt-milk candy, smooth as river water. He made you bien pretty even if I didn’t always know it. Yes he did† (Cisneros 152). Would that have been love for Lupe or was she just feeling that way because of the time they spent together? Lupe begins to ask herself â€Å"What’s happened to me? Flavio was just Flavio, a man I wouldn’t’ve looked at twice before† (Cisneros154). Everything around Lupe would remind her of all the little things of Flavio, In the beginning of the story Lupe points out â€Å"I’m to blame. Flavio Munguia was just an ordinary Flavio until he met me†¦ On ce you tell a man he’s pretty, there’s no taking it back† (Cisneros 137). Lupe chose to believe that she was the reason for Flavio being the way he was, that she turned him into this man that was selfish. After the ongoing relationship that Flavio and Lupe had, the truth was finally spoken. Flavio told Lupe that he had to go back to Mexico to take care of things back home. However, never once did he tell Lupe that he had children from another marriage. By the pain that Lupe was in the only words that could come out â€Å"I think you better go now. I gotta get my clothes out of the dryer before they get wrinkled† (Cisneros 157). Lupe tried to find peace, but because she was still broken all she could think of was anger and how much she wanted to hurt Flavio for hurting her. All that time you spend getting to know someone, loving their insecurities, and loving their biggest flaws for them to just hurt you and leave. Lupe was blinded by Flavio’s love that she forgot who she was. â€Å" Just the way I use to believe I was pretty. Before Flavio Munguia wore all my prettiness away† (Cisneros 137). Everything Lupe felt had turned away and made her feel less, â€Å" When I look in the mirror, Im ugly. How come I never noticed before?†(Cisneros 160). Lupe was in pain. Flavio made her feel like she was the weak one. She was too busy trying to make him feel special she forgot about her own self-worth. To The Girls Who Need To Love Themselves by Madison Sonnier writer from Thought Catalog, explains â€Å"I understand how you must be feeling – desperate for closure, envious of those living a fulfilling single life and loving it, and clueless about where to start on your journey to letting go of the person who haunts you and has consistently failed to give your rare and beautiful heart what it needs.† Lupe regretted two things; not telling Flavio she was in love with him and to ask for forgiveness. Lupe didn’t know what was going to happen next, what she did know was that this would be the last feeling he took from her. It took weeks before Lupe could pick herself back up, she would avoid going to work, painting, and being out in public. Lupe grabbed everything of Flavio and burned them â€Å" I didn’t expect paper to take so long to burn, but it was a lot of layers† (Cisneros 160-161). Later during that time Lupe sat herself in front of a t.v watching a telenovela show where she was then inspired. She would think of the words from Daniela Romo singing â€Å" Ya no. Es verdad que te adoro, pero mas me adoro yo† (I love you, honey, but I love me more)(Cisneros 163). Lupe was done feeling sorry for herself, she picked herself up and remembered who she was. She took a hold of her life, â€Å" The First Step† by Najwa Zebian states â€Å"In order to achieve greatness, you have to be willing to take the right steps towards it† (113). And that is exactly what Lupe chose to do, she chose to take her life back. â€Å"Everywhere I go, It’s me and me. Half of me liv ing my life, the other half watching me live it† ( Cisneros 163). Instead of hurting Flavio any way that she could have Lupe guided herself through the pain and turned it into something greater. We all want to know what it is that makes us feel as much pain when getting hurt. â€Å" Sexology† by Samuel Aun Weor writes â€Å" When human beings are truly in love, they become intuitive, mystical. In such moments they forebode their future, afraid of what might happen to them† (4). Lupe was in love with a man that she didn’t at first even see herself with or even would have noticed him. Even with all the stories they shared with each other, there could have been moments he could have told her the truth. Was it fear of losing her? Or was it that he took advantage of her? We aren’t sure why people don’t always speak up and just really say how they feel. We end up being the ones who are clueless. Lupe could have given up and let Flavio ruin her life, but she chose to become a strong woman and choose her. Love is costful, sometimes that is taking all of someone’s love or worse, someone can go beyond just being depressed but hurting themselve s or another. Love is complicated. Love is beyond us. But it does not take away who we are. Cisneros, Sandra. Woman Hollering Creek and other stories. Business Ethics and Virtue Ethics Research Paper

Business Ethics and Virtue Ethics - Research Paper Example The code was founded in order for the companies to eliminate the awful culture portrayed by fellow companies and industries of unfairly low wages to their workers, long working hours and unsafe working environment, which may lead to the threat of the workers safety. The putting into action of the global manufacturing principles seemed to a stiff step for the Mattel toy company because it lead to the growth of more challenges in the company. This paper will use the virtues of honesty, temperance, and generosity amongst their workers in order to solve the problems facing the Mattel toy company. The company faces the following issues working conditions, worker safety, fairness, and organizational attitudes towards the environment. According to researchers in the field of ethical standards in companies, they suggest that it is important on how the companies recruit workers who posses good ethical virtues to their respective companies. This is conducted in order to make it definite that t he relevant company will grow to develop its goal and vision to the benefit of the company and the public (Sethi, Veral et al. 2011). Honesty The term honesty refers to the virtue by which a person can be said to be frank and truthful to the public. It can also be expressed as the act of a person being free from any fraud activity. The existence of honesty in a company will affect positively the working conditions, the level of organizational attitude and the safety of the working parties in the company. On the point of improving and maintaining, the working conditions will be effective in the Mattel toy company by making sure that employees of the company enjoy working with the company. This would be possible when the leaders of the company take into heart the virtue of honesty into their own heart and duties. The accumulation of the virtue will enable them to present the bad working conditions of their juniors to the management board of the company in a lawful way. This will help in making sure that the funds allocated to them after presenting the issues will be well spent in the favor of improving the working conditions of the employees. The presence of having leaders in a company who have the virtue of telling the truth in a company will be crucial for the company because the employees can copy the good ethic standard of being honest. This will help because the employees will conduct their duties in an honest manner, which will benefit the Mattel toy company a lot (Sethi, Veral et al. 2011). In some cases, managers in companies do not portray the virtue of honesty towards their employees in terms of the level of income. This is evident when the managers take the advantage of their hierarchy of authority in the companies to mistreat the workers by paying them low salary levels, which is against the set agreement based by the employee and the management board. This makes the working environment unfavorable for the workers. These experiences of employees in o ther companies drives the main motive of the Mattel toy company to set the new code of ethics in which the working conditions of the employees in the company are meet with strict action in regardless of their power and authority in the company. The working conditions expected to be addressed by the global manufacturing principles in the ethical code include the amount expected to be paid to each worker is reviewed after a certain
